Attacks on civilians by GoS forces in western Upper Nile, January-April 2002:

Wichoot (N of Nhialdiu), attacked mid-February; survivors moved to Toic Gambal (NE of Wicok) where they were attacked by gunship and looted by GoS militia; moved again to Mayar Lol (W of Wicok).

Ngaryang (near Nhialdiu) attacked late February or early March by ground forces and helicopter gunship, which killed many civilians in random shooting from low altitude. Also fired rockets, setting village on fire.

Tongadol attacked by Antonov and gunship, followed by GoS ground forces, late February or early March. At least two children were killed by ground forces, who shot at fleeing civilians.

Wangrial (W of Nhialdiu), February. Helicopter gunships, 4 at a time, attacked the village 8 times in one day, beginning around 0800. Civilians killed included Mawiech Ruei, Mrs. Nyanger Thany Liem, Manyzol Mawiech, and Diet (aged 11 years). Horsemen came the next morning, looted the cattle and burned the village. Displaced fled to Wanggeah (between Wicok and Leer), moving at night to avoid Antonovs and gunships.

Chan (near Wangrial), February. Attack by Antonovs and gunships very early in the morning; many people killed in their house by rockets. Civilians killed include Paul Mer Yap, Ruai Kuol, Jal Kuol, Nyanai Kuol, Nyalual Tut, Ruai Kor (aged 4 years), Nyagai Tut (aged 2), Nyaluak Lim (aged 5), Gai Tut (aged 7), Nyaduk Ruai (aged 8). After the initial attack by gunship and Antonov, horsemen came, chased people (including elderly and pregnant women) into the river, and shot at them as they struggled to cross. Many children drowned.  Among the dead were Nyaluak Riek, shot in the back and fell into the river, and Nyanhialdiu, shot and killed.

North of Nhialdiu, near Rubnyagai, date uncertain. Gunships, Antonovs and horsemen came together. Antonov came three times, dropping 12 bombs. Gunships used rockets and machine guns. At least 3 women, 6 men and 4 children were killed by machine guns fire. Houses and grain were burned by GoS ground forces after chasing away or killing civilians. People moved to Chotcar/Lel (S of Wicok) by night to avoid Antonovs and gunships.

Chotchiir (near Nhialdiu) was completely destroyed in February during GoS attack. At least 20 civilians unaccounted for. Displaced people now in Chotcar/Lel.

Boitong, mid-February (shortly before GoS capture of Nhialdiu). GoS attack began around 0500. An Antonov bombed the village several times, then two gunships flew low shooting at civilians. Horsemen then came, looting and burning, and abducting civilians. Civilians killed (shot in the back trying to cross the river) include Buoth Kuany (aged 6 years), Gatluak Kuany (aged 7), Gatwiech Kuany (aged 11), Gatkal Gatwiech (aged 8) and Gatwiech Ruai Jour (aged 4) and Tot Kuany, a 7-year old girl found dead with 8 bullets in her body. Still missing are Bol Kuany (aged 3), Pou Kuany (aged 4), Magay Kuany (aged 6), Bieh Kiek (aged 8), Cheyoach Kuany (aged 2) and Nyalual Nyieth (aged 9). Displaced people eventually reached Lel.
