Suspensions of three papers

The independent daily Al-Rai Al Akher, the other opinion, has been suspended repeatedly:
- two days in June for having published a speech by NDA leader Osman el Mirghani,
- five days in July after the Sudanese armed forced lodged a complaint against the paper stating it wrote at length on a plane crash where the vice-President and eight other persons were killed, and hardly mentioned an other crash that coasted the life of fifty members of the armed forces.
So the paper published a press release stating this suspension was a violation of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and of the Convention on Political and Social Freedom; and asked the international agencies to protest against the persecution of the Sudanese press. Then it got two days more suspension for having published articles criticising the government.
- Seven days in August after a complaint against an article criticising the government for having internationalised the Southern question and given a religious aspect to the civil war by calling it jihad.
- Seven days in September for having published the declarations of a follower of Sadek el-Mahdi that affected Islam.
- A sine die suspension after the daily paper humorously wrote that John Garang deserved to have a monument erected in the center of Khartoum because he had sent thousands of young Sudanese martyrs to paradise.

The independent daily Al-Bayan was suspended one day in July for having published articles on a controversial personality and three days in August for having published criticism on the National Congress and refused to sack the journalist who had used inadequate wording when mentioning the NC.

The governmental Alwan was suspended two days in July for having published articles on a controversial personality.

The general Assembly of the Arab Journalists Union appealed to President Beshir in order to have these suspensions stopped. At a rally President Beshir declared that the opposition and the press  "took Satan’s side".
