Sudan : 600.000 children threatened

On July 9th UNICEF comes out with an appeal taken over by the daily «Le Monde».

The humanitarian and food situation is going from bad to worse in the Sudan torn by civil war. On the whole of its territory 600.000 Sudanese children are immediately threatened. The southern population, which numbered eight million people, now hardly reaches five : one million ran away to neighbouring  countries, one million took refuge in the North where they subsist in a very precarious situation and one million has been displaced within the South itself. These people are the one living in a extremely critical situation. In certain areas the children death rate is far  from fifty per cent.

For several months, «Sudan Lifeline Operation» that is to say a consortium of Sudanese and international NGO together with the « World Food Program » and UNICEF which operate from Khartoum in the North and Nairobi in the South have tried to arouse international public opinion.
An appeal has been sent to donors at the beginning of 1998 : From 100 million dollars requested, only half, up to date, has been received.
