Yet more school demolitions
| We have received a fax from Comboni Press in Rome, dated February 27th.
A summary follows :
Well informed sources in Khartoum inform us that four catholic schools, situated in the Baraka district of northern Khartoum, are programmed for demolition three weeks before the end of the 1997-1998 school year. This means that 2500 girls and boys from South Sudan, displaced due to the war, will be thrown into the street. A letter from the housing minister-Baraka district-demands that the leaders of the catholic church ensures "the removal of roofs, doors and windows from the schools" of Jongley, Kassala, Gadima, Kassala Gadida, Hilla Gadida" in order that the demolition work on these schools will not be hindered. The time allowed runs from February 25th to March 5th". The letter ends with the caution " this is the final warning". Subsequently, we have received further news talking of a promise from the governor of the province of Khartoum, that the demolitions will wait until the end of the school year and that other plots of land would be offered to the church in compensation.. |
