Ex Eastern front

Negotiations between Khartoum and the Eastern Front have been held with Eritrea. Eritrea had proven to be sympathetic to the Front but will to take the lead and come to terms with Sudan in the case of an eventual conflict with Ethiopia. An Agreement was signed in October 2006. No word has been heard concerning the Reconstruction and Development Fund which should have been injected with 100 million dollars during 2007 and is supposed to yearly receive 125 million up to 2011. On the ground, the rate malnutrition is serious and widespread.

Adherence to an amendment to the law concerning the ownership of land and the promotion of local languages in education seems a distant and unobtainable idea. Other partial results were achieved at the end of June.

Troops under the command of the ex-rebels are beginning to arrive into town, having left their camps on the Eritrean/Sudan border. Eight of their leaders were given parliamentary positions to replace the eight that handed in their resignations (voluntarily?).
