South Sudan

Education Projects of the Catholic Church

The Catholic Church has the intention of creating a National Institute intended to train teachers as soon as South-Sudan government gives the green light. The school will accept anyone who fulfills the entrance requirements and may be transformed into a university level teaching facility at a future date.

Given the communication and transportation difficulties in underdeveloped South Sudan, the main facility in Malakal, with satellite coverage extending out to every dioceses in the future, will use the radio, printed texts and the internet to build the curriculum on a distance-learning model.

English is the language used in education, a language that few teachers have mastered. It is hoped that before the end of 2007 English classes and pedagogical training will be offered to people already teaching while plans for the teachers college get off the ground. English proficiency is slated to earn a formal diploma (Oxford, Cambridge...).

Remarks imply that English language fluency should include people employed in the communications media. As far as healthcare professionals are concerned, the Catholic Church is waiting to learn what will be done with the property of the Health Training Institute in Wau, a facility built and championed by VS General Secretary, Father Barbier.
