Arms: Two British Manufacturers disregard the EU Embargo (Sunday Times)
Several Land Rovers were sold to the Sudanese Interior Ministry which transformed them into mobile death machines once they were outfitted with machineguns.
The vehicles had been spotted painted white (so as to more easily bare the AU or UN logo?) after arriving in Port Sudan. A UN report issued last year said as much regarding Darfur and elsewhere. An eye witness told AU officials that he had seen a vehicle equipped in this manner fire upon civilians in Tawila (Darfur). A United Kingdom Land Rover spokesperson announced mid April that measures had been taken to prevent further sales.
In November, an arms shipment arrived in Juba. The Sunday Times reported that it was most probable that the delivery was designed to be seen as going to the SPLA, but really destined to supply rebels in Darfur. The cargo contents was sent by Dallex, a company registered in Great Britain, but known to have secretive and troubling links all over the world. It works in partnership with a company called Goliaf Air, itself linked to the infamous arms dealer Victor Anatoliyevitch Bout, who provided guns to more than one African warlord over the last decade. Bout, who currently is sought by Interpol, is reported to be hiding in Syria and/or Russia. (Sunday Times 22 04). |
