War

Northern Sudan. Khartoum has taken the town of Hamashkoreib back from the rebels, with heavy casualties on both sides.
The rebels conquered Kassala and held the town for 24 hours. Kassala is one of the largest agglomerations in Northern Sudan, since it numbers 300.000 inhabitants. This town is near the Eritrean border sitting astride the major road that links Khartoum to Port-Sudan. On November 8th the United Military Command of the National Democratic Alliance launched an attack on the town, captured it, and held it for 24 hours. The Sudanese Government of Khartoum has initiated an inquiry to find out if  the government forces carried out their duty.
The United Military Command states that they withdrew as planned from Kassala after reaching their military objectives, i.e. the capture of an important supply of military equipment, including 13 tanks, and the destruction of the military headquarters. The political aim, they say, was to show  that the NDA were still a political and military force to be reckoned with in spite of all the official propaganda from Khartoum to the contrary. On both sides, there was a whole series of  unjustified summary executions. To fulfill propaganda aims, the NDA would have been better inspired in giving their commandos strict orders to behave themselves.

Southern Sudan. Khartoum has set up at Juba a Chinese radar station in order to reinforce their control over the flights of the United-Nations Operation Lifeline Sudan.
To reduce tension between themselves and the Didinga (see Leonardo Franco’s report in the supplement), the SPLA has integrated men of the tribe into its armed forces.
